The one Confederate icon in Atlanta that appears slated for the dustbin is a street name, Confederate Avenue. In addition, Atlanta may install a sign to mark the site of a slave auction house that once stood near the present Five Points MARTA Station.
These two specific recommendations are likely to be adopted by the city-appointed panel that on Monday is slated to approve a set of guidelines, some say principles, that a future panel can use to determine the fate of Confederate icons on public land in Atlanta. State-owned properties, such as the Capitol and its statuary, are outside the city’s purview.

Hypothetical situation: What if the residents on Confederate Avenue don't want the name changed?

I don't recall any hue and cry over the various street name changes that have already taken place here.
This move is hardly unprecedented.
FWIW, I have no problem with renaming Confederate Avenue, and I'm a ninth-generation Atlantan.

I brought it up because the city's street renaming ordinance requires that 75% of the property owners sign off on the change before it can go into effect.

Well, I will admit to some grumbling on my part. I prefer street names that are simple, like "Elm" and "River" and "35th." If we're going to name streets after a person, just use the last name. "Dogg Avenue" is a lot better than "Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr., Memorial Boulevard."

That being said, I'm fine with changing Confederate Avenue to something else.

i have to agree, it would be nice if they used the last names of individuals only to make it seem less contrived.

There are always some complaints. I remember a few with Ted Turner Drive.

Let's go to a numbered street system! Keep the original 5 Points streets and start numbering from there

Yeah, I think Cynthia McKinney Parkway raised a few hackles, too.
It's hard to deny Ted Turner's transformative effect on this city, however.
