You know, I wonder if the ATL should look into building something like this?

I think it would be cool and we've certainly got the room for it.

Seems like something like this might be a great location for an Amsterdam-style bike haven.

New ordinance would increase fines for vehicles parked in bike lanes.
Parked: $100
Loading/unloading $1000
Quote:
That Chapter 150 (Traffic and Vehicles), Article III (General Rules of Vehicle Operation), Section 150-65 (Bicycle Routes, Bicycle Lanes, and Multi-Use Trails) of the City of Atlanta Code of Ordinances be amended to create a new subsection (c) to prohibit the improper use of bicycle routes, bicycle lanes, and multi-use trails, and to establish a penalty to be imposed for violations thereof which shall read as follows:

(c) Violations; penalties. Any person violating any provision of this section shall be deemed guilty of an offense and upon conviction thereof shall be punished by the municipal court for the City of Atlanta as set forth herein.

(1) No person shall stop, leave standing, or park any passenger vehicle, automobile, light truck, sport utility vehicle, or motorcycle whether attended or unattended, on any portion of a bicycle route, bicycle lane or multi-use trail within the city's municipal street system and on extensions of a county road system within the city's corporate limits, including but not limited to areas for loading and unloading, except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic, or in compliance with the directions of a peace officer or official traffic control device. Any person violating this provision shall be deemed guilty of an offense and upon conviction, shall be fined $100.00.

The difference in fines are for different sizes of vehicles. Passenger cars, light trucks, motorcycles, etc are $100. Vehicles with six or more tires or three or more axles are $1,000. But note the part included which says "except when necessary to avoid conflict with other traffic"...so, does this mean it's okay if the only other option is to stay in the travel lane?

I like it, although $100 seems like a slap on the wrist. I'd up that fine by a factor of 10.

It's not hard to implement this on a smaller scale such as the downtown mall in Charlottesville VA, where a stretch of downtown was closed to cars.

I hardly think that blocking a bike lane for 20 feet is worth a $1,000 punishment.

$100 is a pretty significant amount for many people.

Have sort of done that with Broad Street. Could probably get by with much of that square bordered by Broad, Marietta, Ted Turner, and Luckie going as a little car-free area. None of the roads there really connect to anything, so they probably get very little car traffic as is. Might have to work with the hotel in the middle, but other than that, should be few issues. Make it a little pedestrian utopia where they can all hold hands and sing kum-ba-yah...everyone's happy!

And for those individuals:
Quote:
That the City Solicitor’s Office, in collaboration with the Atlanta Bicycle Coalition, shall develop a Diversion Program to provide education to violators of this ordinance on bicycle safety and traffic laws for both drivers and bicyclists.

Well, here's a prime example. They're forcing a man out of his bike lane and right into a busy, multi-lane street.

A tragic accident waiting to happen, smack dab in the heart of Midtown.

Thank you! Someone understands the dangers of vehicles blocking bike lanes.
