The Gwinnett County-dominated "Corky Kell Classic" prep/high school football showcase announced its schedule for the 2018 edition of the event on Wednesday night.

Amongst the major changes announced for the high-profile prep/high school football showcase, which has been played mostly in the Georgia Dome since its inception in 1992, was the move of the marquee games on the third day of the event on Saturday to the brand new Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Quote:
The 2018 Corky Kell Classic schedule was announced Wednesday night, revealing a couple of new venues and one familiar one for the annual high school football showcase.

Brand-new Mercedes-Benz Stadium will host Corky Kell games for the first time Saturday, Aug. 18, as will Rome’s Barron Stadium, which will be the site of a doubleheader Thursday, Aug. 16. Georgia State, which hosted the event this year, returns to for a doubleheader of games Friday, Aug. 17.

Six Gwinnett teams are in the field — Archer, Brookwood, Buford, Mill Creek, Norcross and North Gwinnett — for an event that made Mercedes-Benz Stadium a priority in planning. The Georgia Dome previously hosted the Saturday games for early-season event, while McEachern and Mercer had hosted the Thursday and Friday matchups.

“There has been some negotiating going on (with Mercedes-Benz Stadium) and it’s considerably more expensive than the Georgia Dome, however, for the good and future of the game, we feel like that’s the venue we have to have,” Corky Kell executive director Dave Hunter said. “These kids will be able to say they played on the field where the national championship game and the Super Bowl was played. … Georgia State could not have been any nicer to us, any more hospitable to us. Charlie Cobb, the (Georgia State) AD, is a 30-year friend of mine. They just made our teams feel great. They just could not have had a better partner. … We wanted to keep that relationship and keep them involved, and they wanted that as well...

...Two Gwinnett teams are scheduled for the Friday, Aug. 17 doubleheader at Georgia State — Buford vs. Tucker at 5:30 p.m., followed by Archer vs. Milton. The Saturday, Aug. 18 games include Brookwood vs. North Gwinnett at 11:45 a.m., Mill Creek vs. Walton at 5:45 p.m. and Norcross vs. Mays at 8:45 p.m. The other two Saturday games are Kell vs. East Coweta at 9 a.m. and McEachern vs. Colquitt County at 2:45 p.m...

...The games will be broadcast on TV by WXIA via its WATL affiliate.

Other significant changes of note for the 2018 Corky Kell Classic prep/high school football showcase are:

> The addition of an Atlanta Public Schools participant in Benjamin Mays High School... The first time that an APS football program has ever participated in the Corky Kell Classic in the history of the high-profile event, which historically has been dominated by prep football programs in outlying suburban areas, most notably in Gwinnett and Cobb counties...

> The movement of the first night of games from Mercer University in Macon in Middle Georgia to Barron Field in Rome in Northwest Georgia... A move that ironically reflects the continuing shift in the power and the center of gravity of the sport of Georgia prep/high school football from its historical power base in South Georgia (including almost all of Georgia south of the Fall Line or "Gnat Line") to Metro Atlanta and North Georgia.
