The Peachtree City Council will consider an ordinance Thursday to allow city employees (and elected officials such as themselves) to sue citizens who **defame** them on social media or in news stories ... AT CITY EXPENSE!! So if a council member didn’t like something said about them on Facebook, they could have the city sue that person in retaliation.

Oh yeah ... there’s NOTHING unconstitutional about any of that!

Somebody down in PTC has been drinking too much Trump kool-aid

Holy crap! Did they discuss this with the city attorney before coming up with this plan?? The reason this has never been done in Georgia is because most would just instinctively know that this violates the Constitution. I don't think a citizen who has been sued by the city would even have to pay for an attorney. I'm sure the ACLU and every other First Amendment group on the planet would line up to represent that person.

I am so disappointed in my elected officials. Beyond words....

I was 100% with you until you threw in the trump comment. That was totally unneeded.

Yep... And the city attorney was probably really interested in the part about the additional 20% fee that they would be paid by these idiots on each lawsuit filed.

And just to think that the Peachtree City Council thought that they were getting too much criticism before.

What do they think that the public criticism is going to be like after proposing something as idiotic (and probably most assuredly as blatantly unconstitutional) as this?

Just playing devil's advocate for a minute, but how are you going to get good people to serve as politicians if everybody goes around criticizing them right and left?

Shouldn't elected officials be held to the highest standards?

Oh I missed the part about the increased fee! That attorney has no shame.

If you're not willing to listen to your constituents, then you are not a "good" politician. If you think we have bad politicians, just think what would happen if people felt reluctant to speak out against them for fear of a lawsuit, funded by their own tax dollars. Yes, some people do slander politicians, but if politicians are transparent about their actions, it should be easy to knock those rumors down.

There are other areas that can be addressed to get more people running for office--campaign finance reform, for instance.

That's a play off of the term "The People's Republic of Boulder", but the author missed the other moniker for Boulder, "25 sq miles surrounded by reality" and that one really fits PTC! lol.
