This is coming from someone who's been truck driving. They don't drive anything like cars and generally ALOT of forgiveness needs to be given to them and driver intuitive correction.

These goons who truly believe a computer can pilot a vehicle better than a well attent driver have no idea.
For what?

The computer can't be any worst than the idiots on the road already plus it is a driver behind the wheel so much ado about nothing.

You obviously don't understand how computers work. Every possible possibility must be explicitly coded by someone. We seriously take for granted just how much information our brains process and how rapidly. Our brains also have an advantage of being "fuzzy" while computers have to use exact values for the most part.

Point of the matter is a driver is still behind the wheel so as I stated, much ado about nothing.

The system is pretty close to SuperCruise in the Cadillac CT6. If the system doesn't deem it safe, it will disengage the system hence why a driver is still required behind the wheel.

Stick to your rambling post about guns and MARTA...

Hopefully they know they can't drive inside 285

A driver behind the wheel of a self-driven vehicle is going to lose focus pretty fast and most likely be oblivious to the road. That's one thing in a car...and a completely different think in an 18-wheeler.

It'll be a long damn time before the trucks can be programmed to back into a loading dock.

Hence why they still have drivers for the "local" portion of the trip...

Exactly. On every level, a computer has the potential to be more capable and reliable than a human being. You know, those pilots of vehicles that are responsible for over 1500+ fatalities during 2017...in Georgia alone. I think a lot of you are oblivious to how other people are driving on the roads these days. A significant portion of drivers have no business behind the wheel, the human factor needs to be taken out of the equation as soon as possible.

We're already sharing the road with computers driving. That point has passed. Hands free "cruise control" is the feature Cadillac is touting the most this model year - Super Cruise - Hands Free Driving | Cadillac Ownership

So many other cars, like basic type cars, are advertising computer assisted braking and cruise control type systems. As these features get miles behind them, they're going to rapidly improve the programs doing the driving. I think there's a chance true AVs could happen before many are expecting.

I highly doubt that, considering things like automated parking and parallel parking have been about for the past 10-15 years. There's already systems successfully being tested.

Also, people mistake autonomous vs automated.

Autonomous still means there is a human at the wheel ( usually in case something goes awry with the computer - e.g. the automated bus that's on the north point corridor ) vs automated means no human presence.

Backing into the dock is actually fairly easy to automate. No other unpredictable vehicles, the dock hasn't moved since the last time, etc. And before you go there, I drove a semi locally for a brief period while in college.

I wouldn't recommend truck driving as an occupation for anyone right now.
