Purpose-Built Schools (of Drew Charter fame) is now taking over Carver High School. Any thoughts?

When it comes to K-12 education in urban areas, a lot of outside of the box thinking and ideas are going to have to be used to get the desired results. Not saying this will be a success, but we all know the definition of insanity!!!

Students deserve better than incompetent leadership at their school. There seems to be a lot of that in APS. Maybe these folks will be better than who they are replacing. Maybe they won't. I hope things improve for the sake of the kids.

Except, if you read the article, the principal and asst principals were kept.

Then I expect nothing will fundamentally change.

Expect APS to mirror post-Katrina New Orleans Public Schools with the majority of its public school district being charter schools. Depending on how competent those individual charter operators/boards are will yield the outcome of how well performing these schools are...

There are MANY great and smart students in Atlanta Public Schools that are overlooked. I REALLY wish the new regime at Carver ALL the best, and if they do well, perhaps they can head over to the Douglass High cluster next: prayers being sent up!

Similar move in the Douglass Cluster. I wonder what’s going to be the plan for the Washington Cluster? I don’t think the charter takeover is necessarily a bad idea, but with Washington High School especially, it will take special care and consideration to avoid incredible backlash. Like Grady, Washington is steeped in history and tradition and although it’s woefully underenrolled and underperforming, I think local residents believe that a charter takeover of that school would be the first step to erase or downplay its historical, social, and cultural significance. Nevertheless, I hope it all comes together...
