I was listening to a show on NPR where they were talking about so-called ball culture in NYC back in the day. Apparently it involves a lot of voguing and is popular with black and Hispanic LGBT folks. I remember Madonna had a big hit called Vogue about 30 years ago but I don't know if this is the same thing.

Did this ever come to the ATL?

Might need a little more context on this one. Can you provide a link to the NPR story?

Didn't voguing last about 3 weeks, and by the time the song came out, nobody was even doing it anymore?

Good thing it was a good song.

No, it lasted much longer than that. You're remembering when Madonna appropriated the dance from her song of the same name, and she got the dance from visiting the clubs Arjay mentioned in their post.

To answer the thread question, I would assume so but NYC was the hotbed of it.

Yeah, House of Escada in Atlanta is more than 20 years old.

Most "chocolate cities" have ballroom cultures, and participants don't only "vogue." There's a form of competitive voguing that's pretty intense today, but balls are so much more.

Interesting. Do they usually hold the balls in a nightclub or rent an event space?

Yes Atlanta has ball culture I have seen videos of it, I've seen Mariah Paris Balenciaga from RPDR at one before.

The TV show Pose on FX is based on the NYC ball culture

Any rented or donated space with enough room for houses to walk together. I think drag culture's known more for being in dance/nightclub spaces partly due to network access by proxy of profession. And early NYC was full of abandoned buildings and huge, cheap flats later chopped up into closets by developers. I don't know anything about ATL real estate pre-1990s!
