A new bill signed into law this year could bring 3,000 jobs and up to $1.6 billion in investment in Marietta’s Lockheed Martin facility over the next several years, Gov. Brian Kemp said during his visit to the plant Thursday.

Kemp also said the bill could add 22,000 jobs across the state. The 19,000 non-Lockheed jobs are “indirect and induced jobs” which means they are “created by other companies as a result of [Lockheed’s] growth,” Lockheed officials said.
Possible good news for Dobbins ARB and Air Force Plant 6.

Good move by Kemp and the legislatures. Would be great if Lockheed/Dobbins could land the Next Generation Air Dominance fighter. Most assume that Lockheed built the prototype. The C-130 seems to be a never ending revenue source, but the Air Force has begun looking at a replacement to better handle the future battlespace.. Reading the text of the bill, its tailored to land just such a major production contract for Georgia.

Lockheed Martin’s relationship with Georgia Tech may have some influence in their decision to further invest in Georgia with Tech’s recent opening of GTRI near the Lockheed campus in Marietta.

Being in the electronic warfare and airborne surveillance/reconnaissance worlds for much of my Air Force career, I can't tell you how much Georgia Tech was associated with the development and sustainability of the electronic equipment and software we utilized. We would often send Airmen on temporary duty to GT to interface and learn from their engineers. This is a good thing. GT is a definite draw for defense industry opportunities in the metro. I may have to polish up the resume and consider leaving the teaching gig behind if the right opportunities appear.

I was aware of GT being granted several military contracts throughout the years. You give some good insight.

I wish you the best at whatever direction you choose!

I'm almost certain it's for the NGAD fighter, the air force has already flown a prototype & wants to start procurement asap. As they finalize the design they can begin to build out the factory.

From what I have seen on message boards, the plane is going to be based on the tailless FB-22 design powered by 2 Pratt & Whitney F135 engines.

If it happens, Lockheed has a ton of empty buildings on their campus especially the South side of the campus in Smyrna. The company generally hates Georgia and has decided to go all in on the Fort Worth facility and F35 production there. Hopefully something big can be done on the South campus even if not the F35 a potential tanker project with Airbus was being discussed at one time.

Why does Lockheed not like Georgia, MT? I thought we were considered a pretty business friendly state.

Their cost to produce here is much higher than the cost in Texas. Ever since Lockheed acquired General Dynamic Aeronautics division in the 90s (based in Fort Worth) their focus has been on their facilities out there at the expense of the ones in Georgia. Also the cancellation and scale back of the F22 program had a very negative effect on operations in Georgia. I'd imagine this bill will really help with lowering their cost and making it more competitive for them to build future projects in Georgia hopefully.
