Atlanta Botanical Garden grows: Canopy Walk, new gardens opening Saturday

If the original Yankee Stadium was the “House that Ruth Built,” then the Atlanta Botanical Garden’s expansion is the addition that Dale Chihuly propagated.
A suggestion that he has Great Bambino-like clout may come as a surprise even to Chihuly, the famed, eye-patch-wearing Seattle glass artist. But his 2004 exhibit at the Atlanta attraction elevated and repositioned it, seeding a $55 million expansion, Phase 2 of which opens Saturday.
“The Chihuly exhibit was our coming-out party,” said executive director Mary Pat Matheson, who took over in 2002 with a strong grow-the-garden agenda. “It was very deliberate. I knew what the impact would be: tremendous.”

Matheson was tilling the soil, trying to show metro Atlantans that the garden was not just a pretty plant place but a major cultural asset. The distinction was important because she was preparing to ask potential donors for gifts that “would be considered extraordinary.”

I went to the Botanical Gardens last Saturday. Very busy place for Mother's Day weekend. They have the new "edible" garden open where the old parking lot used to be, a new large pond/waterfall area, among other things, too.

The canopy walk was interesting, but I have a really bad fear of heights. Thought I would be able to make it across ok until it started to "wobble" with all the people on it - ick - not good for me. I made it across but doubt I'll be doing that again.

A photo of it, though (I was standing under it aiming up, so it's higher above the ground than the photo suggests)...




Will add one more for measure. At one time in the past I think this kid peed in the pool but his pee thingy broke. Not sure, though. Either way, nice place...

I was at the Botanical Garden on Friday! I took some pictures that I'll post sometime soon.

The Botanical Gardens are a real treasure. Anyone from out of town should visit. I was there for the opening of the Canopy Walk and it was a beautiful night. Even in the heat of the summer, it is a great place and during the weekday fun to see all of the school children on field trips learning and laughing.

I was also there Saturday. It was my first time, and I thought it was wonderful. My daughter loved the children's garden. I wasn't overly impressed with the Canopy Walk. I mean, it was OK, but I was expecting more given all the hype. My favorite part was the conservatory.

It's grown a great deal over the last few years. Area (land) wise, it's probably nearly double the size it was just a few years ago. The Conservatory is one of the nicer things about it, and the chicken-thing birds were running all over the place with their chicks in side the time I was in there. The Orchid room is a new(er) addition, FYI. The Desert area just outside of it used to be inside glass in a smaller area - a couple of years or so ago they did away with the enclosure and greatly expanded that, too.
