The mayor stated growth along the riverfront is the top priority.. He wants the baseball stadium/mix-use facility and GHSU research park on the Golf and Gardens property(17 acres)... GHSU president Dr. Ricardo Azziz and other GHSU members met with officials from the Cal Ripken corporaton.. The mayor also wants to start a design competition for the old train depot on Reynolds street...

Augusta would leave behind alot peer cities in growth... Due to all the other construction either underway or planned in/around the dowtown and Medical District.. The mayor says he can bring Jim Jacoby, Cal Ripken, and Dr. Azziz to the table and get the deal done..

Any thoughts????

Anyone have a picture of the old rail depot? What type of area is it in and what types of uses surround it?

It's near the riverwalk, 8th street plaza, banks, Port Royal condos, restaurants, offices etc..

It's located on Reynolds street where the Tee Center and parking deck are underway.. Along with the future Hyatt Place, parking deck, and office building..

The city is repairing the roof on the building..

It sounds to be a good idea in general, but not sure how current residents feel about traffic congestion and such. I know when we finally built CoMerica park when i resided in Detroit it was the ONLY growth that remained productive and operating( so sad) but it generates a lot of foot and car traffic in that region it had before. From the maps it seems to be a good location
(so sad to see Fort Discovery go before I even got to go see it)

Lake Olmstead Stadium (home of the GreenJackets) has occasional concerts...seats 4,400 people.
James Brown Arena (home of the RiverHawks) is the largest indoor arena in the metro...seats 8,500.
Bell Auditorium is the largest auditorium...seats 2,700.
Imperial Theater...seats 850.
USCA Convocation Center is another indoor arena, located in Aiken...seats roughly 4,000.
TEE Center (under construction) will be the area's only convention center...200,000 sq. ft. complex, 40,000 sq. ft. exhibit hall capable of holding 3,500 people if configured as a theater.

Guess I need to go look up their locations so I can go check them out. =)

Point I was getting at for asking I was going to say if there's none near by besides Atlanta it be a HUGE draw and bonus to Augusta, but seeing how I was wrong on all accounts I'll just shut up now =)

I think this project could seriously happen. But if worst comes to worst atleast we know that more than likely a research park will occupy the area if a stadium doesn't. Still more and more projects are getting off the ground in Augusta now a days.
