Augusta water taxi, pedestrian bridge under discussion (Savannah: maintenance, price)

Several commissioners, including Sean Frantom and Marion Williams, and Mayor Hardie Davis went aboard The Patriot on Monday to look at options for a water taxi service in a meeting arranged by Recreation Di*rec*tor Glenn Parker, Williams said. The Patriot is a pontoon boat that provides tours on the Savannah River.
The taxi service would be an attraction and boon for economic development, he said.
The city also is exploring reopening the lesser-used Fifth Street Bridge as a pedestrian crossing, Engi*neering Director Abie Ladson confirmed at a committee meeting Tuesday.
Ladson said the aging bridge was in line for $8 million or $9 million in Trans*por*tation Investment Act funds, but replacing it for vehicle traffic would cost $15 million or $20 million.
The big Savannah River plans came up during discussion of maintenance at River*walk Augusta.
Parker presented a list of items the mayor and commission came up with during walk-throughs in June and later. Their combined price tag was $339,350, but some items weren’t priced.
