We leave our cats in the master bedroom during the day to limit their awesome destructive power. The room has a ceiling fan, but I'm never sure what to set the temperature at, especially in August.

I want to keep the cats comfortable, but I also need to save money on the AC bill during the day.

I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks. :-)

Probably 80 or even 82 should be fine, if there is a fan. Higher than that, and you're risking damage to your stuff because of humidity anyway... Of course, it depends on the cat (maybe a little cooler for a long hair). Our cats actually LIKE to go hang out in our the garage during the evening, where it's like 85+ and sauna-like. I think if they can lay on a cool, hard floor (tile, wood or concrete) and have plenty of water they are happy. Probably your master bath has tile, right? That should be fine.

I have dogs with pretty thick fur and I leave it on 77.

My Smudge always liked very hot but each cat is different. Cats like the heat more than dogs do but we set our heat/AC at 70 year around unless the windows are open.

Thanks for the feedback guys! Hopefully I can get by with 80. The floors are wood, and there is tile in the bathroom. And the back rooms are much cooler than the front of the house.

Wow, CSD610, 70 all the time in the summer? My bill would be insane.

I have to assume CSD610 is not from this part of the country... Keeping a home at 70 degrees in Austin would require an extra mortgage-payment-sized electric bill. Would literally be cheaper to fly somewhere that actually is 70 outside degrees instead!

If it was for a cat, I'd turn off the a/c altogether.

Do fans help furred animals? Fans don't cool the air. The moving air allows your skin to evaporate sweat faster, cooling your skin. Dogs and cats don't sweat so does a fan do any good?

I don't understand why there is any concern at all. Our cats are outside cats. They stay in the shade in the carport, lie under the cars etc. when it is 100 outside. 80 degrees would be nirvana. They have fresh water at all times.

Our cats prefer to be outside. They lie in the shade or under the deck or on the porch. They come in for food or to chill out for a bit but then sit at the door and miow. We have just moved from the UK so maybe they are just enjoying not being cold!!!
