Wife and I just moved to the area and want to do some exploring in Austin. How is 6th street for kids?

It's fine - during the day.

If he's been to the Playboy Mansion, he'll be fine on 6th street.

Depends on what time of the day you go....there is really nothing FOR kids on 6th, unless they enjoy drinking and listening to music in bars...and at night, I don't think an environment of thousands of college students getting loaded is a primo place to hang with your 4-year-old....but my uncle brought ME to bars when I was 4, so what do I know? I just stayed in the back and played the pinball machines!

Bourbon street is a far better environment for children.....I would lean towards that...

No. During the day there's not much going on and you should never bring a child there at night. Ever.

Try the Arboretum area, it's more family-friendly. I used to live near there and ate out regularly and had pretty high cleaning bills from the food other peoples' toddlers threw at me.

Even just try the west end of 6th street, west of Lamar! Even downtown is more kid-friendly. "Sixth Street" east of Congress is nothing but a strip of bars, dirty, smelly. Its pretty empty during the day and no place for a child at night.

Austin is full of kid-friendly venues where grown ups can listen to music and have a glass of wine and kids can play. Try dinner under the oaks at Central Market, huge placescape for kids, good food and music. There are dozens of similar places in Austin, but you won't find any on Sixth Street! Sixth Street is just for drunk students and tourists.

One of the clubs has, or used to have, a Saturday morning dance club for little kids. Can't remember which one.

Sixth Street even during the day time isn't a great place for kids. I've seen lots of shady characters wandering around there in the middle of the day, particularly around Red River St (there's a huge homeless shelter a block away).

Like others have said, The Arboretum has more family-friendly things (the playground there is particularly nice).

There really isn't anything going on during the day on 6th. It's mostly a bar/business street. However, the childrens museum is just a few blocks over and is awesome.
