I moved here from San Diego! I live between Dallas and Fort Worth. You'll love the home prices out here!! I bought a 3 bed two bath on almost a 1/4 acre for way less than what a condo would cost in SD!! That was 7 years ago....but prices are still good. You can get about 2000 sq ft for about 140,000. Lot's of Cali's moving out here. Do you have any idea where you want to go in Texas? Dallas? San Antonio? Austin?.....If I had to do it over again I would have gone to San Antonio. It has more things to do that might remind you of home. Downtown is kind of like the Gaslamp. Sea World etc.

Hello we are also looking into relocating to Texas. We are a young couple with 2 kids & 1 on the way. (3 1/2 yrd old- 51/2 yr old) What we are mainly looking for is safe neighborhood, good schools, affortable housing, liveable weather and of course jobs at a resonable distance. What do you guys suggest ?? We were also leaning towards Austin.. please give me your suggestions.

I would definately pick Austin over any of the other major cities. Don't know where you're coming from, but Austin is like no other place! The people, food, atmosphere, scenary...and so on, is just AWESOME! I've tried for several years to relocate to Austin, but it's just never happened. But I can tell you it is a wonderful city! Really depends what you're looking for, I would say Dallas and Houston are more like Phoenix, Atlanta, Florida...areas w/out of control growth/sprawl, little character, full of transplants just looking to make their money then get out ASAP. Austin has much more character, better food, much more liberal minded, so maybe not as accomadating of growth at all costs as the beforementioned cities. I could be wrong about that, but Austin has seemed to retain it's character, charm much more. It's more like Seattle, San Fran, etc. San Antonio, I would say is a mix of Austin and Dallas/Houston. They are allowing growth to take over and destroy a lot of its charm, but still not nearly on the level as Dallas/Houston.

Default My personal preference would be Austin...

Been living just outside (NW) of Austin since '81 and don't want to move...at least very far.
Dallas would maybe come in second for me...traffic is a bit friendlier there than in Austin.
Houston? No way for me.
And if you want to stay young, Austin beats sny place in Texas, hands-down!!

Disclaimer - I am not a realtor! However, I would strongly suggest one to answer those 'basic' questions, since they really are not very simple. There is always a trade-off between price, quality, and location. In Austin, closer to downtown starts costing more. Some of the great areas in central Austin run ~$300/ft2, while similar quality (but usually newer) houses in NW or SW Austin are in the $100 to $150 per square foot. And there are many areas that are more or less, that may or may not fit your needs.

Anyway, find a realtor that is willing to spend time talking you through the various options and areas. I highly recommend interviewing prospective realtors and avoiding the overly 'gung-ho, lets get you in a house NOW' ones (unless that is really what you are looking for).

What price range are you looking in? What is your maximum distance would be acceptable from the city?
