Does anyone have a favorite place to tent camp within about 2 hours of Austin? Further out is fine if it's a great place. We LOVE camping at Enchanted Rock cause you can climb on the rocks all day and then chill at night. Inks Lake is okay too but only when it's not crowded.

Where is your favorite place and why?

The only place we ever camped was Paleface Park (Pace Bend). I have some friends that like to camp at Lake Somerville.

Pace Bend is an excellent suggestion. I've been there for a picnic but just didn't think of it for camping. Thanks!! Will check out Lake Somerville too.

Rough camping at Pedernales Falls state park is not bad either, but have only gone there in the summer...then the river is wonderful during the day. Palmetto State Park is also kind of nice.

Bastrop state park is nice too, if you like tall piney woods. Lockhart state park is pretty too!

We camped Palmetto State Park over Thanksgiving - very nice, quiet, clean, not much to hike though. But we enjoyed how secluded it was.

We camped Bastrop State Park over Christmas and wasn't aware it was under construction until we got there. The only playground is under construction as well as some other areas. The bathrooms will be done as well and they really need it. It is noisy there because HWY 71 runs next to the park - imagine 18 wheelers and loud motorcycles at night. Despite all that we had a blast. The hiking trails are awesome and made up for all the pitfalls.

We have camped Inks Lake before. It's nice because you can camp right along the lake. There are also plenty of hiking trails with some nice views.

How far is Garner State Park? I personally haven't been there but know lots of people that LOVE it. My Grandpa used to take my mom there during the Summers, when she was growing up, and she has great memories of it.
