I was not holding my breath but here we see it again... Downtown Austin feeling hotel room crunch

Anyone have the story on this?

I could see a Spa Resort and Conference Center out there since it is so pretty and they have that awesome mall ready to go if the economy would just recover.

I think it would be lovely but they have been talking about this since we built out house in FH in 2005... they also said that the galleria would be more like the domain (which was the plan at the time), but builders are always going to try to sell the potential of an area when nothing is nailed down. A that point they were discussing a resort with water-park like grounds available for use by the residents.

I talked to someone who had a great discussion with a market research guru representing recent purchasers of the Galleria and they could not figure out why the mall had not taken off given the region's demographics. I guess the mall is defying established norms. If my husband and I decide to stay put in the greater Austin region, we will definitely move there. You are fortunate indeed.

So it is under performing? The income is here but I just don't think that people in this area have much of an interest in shopping, and if so, the stores just don't meet the need (I think Nordstrom would do better than a Dillard's for example). People are more interested in activities and eating out than stuff, but do like services. This is my opinion but there is a reason I relocated here instead of other places. I think if fashion and consumption was the focus I would have stayed in Dallas or the east coast.

My personal take on the Galleria is it's anchored by Dillards, 'nuff said... you don't anchor a nice mall in a very upscale area with Dillards! I rather see a Macy's and Kohl's over Dillards anyday!

I never thought of Kohl's as upscale.

I didn't say Kohl's is upscale. I said I rather a Kohls and Macys over a Dillards. Plus, there is already an Old Navy which is the lower brand of the Gap, and Old Navy typically competes with the clientele of Kohl's. The Galleria is the only shopping for the people in Spicewood, and Spicewood is not an upscale a price point as Bee Cave is, and I think Kohls and Macys would benefit a lot by moving in.

That's not to say Nordstroms or Saks or other high end stuff can't join the party as I think they would do well also. It's just that I don't personally think Dillards fits in, plus it's the only "department" store at the mall. It makes no sense to not have other "department" stores.

I love Dillards and I think it is exactly on par with Macy's. Same products; at least the ones I buy. Also they are owned by the same parent company.
