So I'm finishing a Ph.D. in microbiology up here in Boston in May. I came down to Austin this last summer to interview for a postdoc (which I got) and absolutely loved it. You guys pretty much live in the coolest city on the planet.

Anyway, long story short, the position that I accepted might vanish before I can even get down there, which is an enormous bummer. I could probably get a job doing something up here in Boston, but my fiancee and I were totally set on Central TX (and Austin in particular). Her mom lives nearby, it's cheap enough for us to work down her student debt, plus it just rules.

So I've been doing some searching online for jobs in the area that I might be qualified for. I think I'd be happy doing pretty much anything that I found challenging and engaging, so I've been conducting a broad search. But things seem pretty sparse. In particular, I've only been able to find two biotech companies (Life Technologies and XBiotech), one general strategic consulting firm (GLG) and a few IP law firms. I also looked at the 512 Brewery but I don't know about my ability to lift 150 lbs regularly, unfortunately I've looked at San Antonio as well, but Austin is still our number one choice.

So my question to you is what do people with Ph.D.s in biology do in Austin? Is the job market for people with my qualifications growing?

Thanks all, great forum

we probably have almost no market for microbiology PHD's. However if you are smart and are interested in learning software product management (how to design software - i.e. what features should be in the software) drop me a PM. Someday you can make it back into bioinformatics or something and design software for the biotech field.

Salaries start around 55-60K and within 3 years you can be making 100k+.
