I'm thinking of taking a job at Ft Hood, TX and was wondering if living in Austin and driving back and forth would be too far? Currently, I drive about 50 minutes to work, so I'm used to the drive. Could someone give me some insight? Thanks

That would depend if you live in North or South Austin. From the North side it would not be to bad but from the South side it would be bad.

I used to work in SW Austin and we had a couple of people commute from Killeen. I think the key to happiness is being able to get to work early and to leave early (or late). The commute can easily take you way more than an hour if traffic is bad enough.

I live in RR and I had to go to Killeen, right near Ft. Hood for a weekend class and it took me a hour and 10 minutes to get there and back. This was on a weekend with no commute traffic. I wouldn't recommend it unless there was no other job offer.

I lived in Temple and commuted to Austin for a year. Then I moved to Georgetown and commuted to Killeen for school. I would not sign up to do it again just because of the sheer volume of traffic on the road now. I don't mind an easy 50 minute commute, but when you are fighting horrible traffic all the way, it's very exhausting.

A friend of mine drives to/from Ft. Hood 5 days a week, he said it was bout 65 miles. He's more or less East-Central Austin, just takes 35.

I live in Leander and my next door neighbor works in Belton and it takes him about 45 mins to get to work. With in reason I guess for a commute.

What about living in Kileen and driving to Austin on the weekends? Unnecessary long commutes are a waste of time, money, and are bad for the environment and your own stress levels. Case in point is a coworker of mine who just this past Friday was lamenting that he wouldn't be home, which happens to be Seguin about 62 miles south of Austin, until 7 PM.

A lot of folks from Fort Hood live in Georgetown (especially if one half of a couple works in Austin - great split of the commute). That way, you're halfway between what appear to be the primary forces in your life at the moment. Of course, that makes an assumption - why do you want to live in Austin while working at Fort Hood?

I don't have any interest in living in Killeen. 26 years old and single, I'd rather be in Austin for obvious reasons. Thanks for the help though! I was told there is a back way to Killeen?? I can handle the drive, I do it now.
