Where to take her? She arrives at 3:30 today for a visit and then leaves Sunday. She's a musician who plays the viola, is 28, and is not a wild partier. Sounds like I'm trying to find her someone to date, doesn't it?

My ideas so far (My husband and I are fairly new ourselves as of August, '07.):

Oasis
Scenic drive of 360, 620, Tarrytown, Lake Austin
So Co shopping
Mt. Bonnell
Zilker
check out 6th and 4th streets
visit a church on Sunday
Show her the UT campus
Maybe Mayfield Park?
Have the bats returned to the bridge (or were they ever gone)? What time?
She wants to experience the Tex-Mex, so I thought of Chuy's??? (We love it.)
Other suggestions?

I'm a last minute type of gal, obviously. Thanks for any input. What made YOU first fall in love with Austin (if you're a transplant)?

Forget about the bats. They're not good til the end of summer. I'm trying to get my sister to move here too!

Your list looks pretty good.

As jhwest mentioned, the bats won't be around. They pretty much follow the bug population, and won't be real active until the bugs get bad!

I'd definitely include a walk along town lake trail (going to Zilker may be enough)... watching all the people excercising really "speaks" to people who are interested in self-help. Does she like biking/hiking? Where is she from? Perhaps a hike on the Barton Creek Greenbelt?

During your visit to the UT campus, you'll probably want to make sure to hit the Ransom center and/or Blanton art museum... maybe even the LBJ library.

Oh, this looks cool : Urban Dare ... probably a little late to enter, but maybe you can watch a bit of it if you are in Zilker Sat at noon:

Event Description:
It's like a one-day Amazing Race. Get ready for the best challenge you ever took. Take the dare.

LOL ... I'm a native San Franciscan married to a native Austinite and we're moving back to Austin this June. I'm already working on my sister, too.

My favorite Tex-Mex choice: Matt's El Rancho on Lamar. Great restaurant, excellent food, a true Austin tradition.

Thanks so much, yall! These are great ideas and I hope to hear more, too. We'll skip the bats, although she'll be disappointed. It will be great to have an alternative to Chuy's. Does anyone know of any classical or semi-classical music performances going on this weekend? She is from Ohio (and SC originally.) Thanks for your ideas. This is really helping!

No trip to Texas is complete until you have a plate of BBQ. I would recommend a plate of brisquit and sausage at Green Mesquite (since you will be downtown) at Barton Springs/S. Lamar. Be sure to eat outside and have a cold Shiner. They have a killer pecan pie for dessert.

Rudy's is OK although their sausage is pretty weak.

While on SoCo, have a cup of mexican vanilla ice cream or dirt (its a chocolate concoction) at Amy's Ice Cream.

Stay off I-35 so you don't scare her. She'll find out how bad it can be when she moves here.

Grab a Chronicle and give her a copy so she can learn about our art & music scene.

Unfortunately neither seems to be performing this weekend, but she'd probably like :

Austin Symphony

or, more funky -- they perform the music of video games, tv shows, etc:

AUSTIN'S PREMIERE CINEMATIC SYMPHONY! DEDICATED TO PRESERVING AND PERFORMING THE MUSIC OF FILM AND TELEVISION! - THE ONLY ENSEMBLE IN THE WORLD OF ITS KIND! -* NO GERSHWIN - NO SOUSA - ONLY THE MUSIC OF FILM AND TELEVISION

--

Otherwise, just check the Austin Chronicle (or their website) for show listings for this weekend. There are plenty of options. Dunno about classical...

--

Also, if you are looking for another Tex-Mex option besides Chuys, I'd recommend Gueros. That's where you'll find all the hipsters on SoCo eating and drinking margaritas. They also have a small music venue outside next door..

I would second Matt's El Rancho. I take my out of town guests there and they get a taste of true old Austin and good Mexican Food. I'm not big on Guero's. They got famous because their food was good even before they moved to SoCo, but once they became a hotspot, the food went downhill and the service even more so. It's been hit and miss when I've gone with more misses than hits. Of course, Chuy's is always fun.

Check the KUT website for music of the type you mention - they'd be most likely to have it.

Sorry, I know this is late, just got home from a day away from the computer.
