Austin and Dallas were selected as part of the 20 final candidates, Houston was eliminated. I suspect Houston was eliminated because the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey happened at the same time Amazon was making the selections. Houston will need to invest in infrastructure to prevent flooding if it's ever going to win these major deals:

Tbh, many of the '238' were not viable. The list of 20 is pretty close to the list of cities you would expect to be in the running anyway, so I am not sure it is that informative, really. Places like Houston being 'cut' is somewhat significant, I guess - did San Antonio bid? Or San Diego or Seattle?

The San Antonio mayor said "thanks but no thanks" basically to Bezos.
Houston bid and I'm surprised that Miami was chosen over Houston to be honest. Miami has the same weather related concerns. I guess it would be easier to lure candidates to Miami than Houston though?

As Amazon HQ today is in Seattle, could be hard to get also second HQ there. But it would have synergies for sure
