I am looking to relocate to Austin from the Midwest (Columbus, Ohio). I would like to hear more about the culture of the city. If anyone has relocated to Austin from the Midwest, please point out the differences! Thanks!

Well I used to live in the KC area. In the Midwest people are very reserved and apolitical. They mow their grass or shovel their snow every week, they drive orderly, and they are generally even keeled. They are conservative for the most part but possibly a bit boring.

Austin is not like that. Austin people are very outgoing and extremely political for the most part. They let their yards go unkempt, even the city does. They drive like crazies, and they are very emotionally based. They are liberal for the most part and possibly too exciting for most people.

Austinites tend to be Austinish, more or less.

Culture will be heavily dependent on where you live and work. There are some funny culture maps of austin that have a hint of truth

Some things that are generally true, but becoming less true

1) mostly white, so culturally white
2) doesnt require you to dress up, somewhat laid back
3) generally likes eating out and drinking (high per capita restaurants/bars)
4) lots of transplants who bring their culture
5) small town mentality, transitioning to big town, reflected in the planning
6) ruled by white liberal neighborhoods
7) environmentally conscious
8) not too materialistic, but becoming moreso

There are probably other things as well

Not just downtown. Up by Round Rock, so many overpasses have homeless camps

(Drives car into mailbox and gets out of car) "What do you mean we're emotional, huh? So, it's like that, huh? Why don't you say what you really think? Well, I'll tell you that I'm not in the mood for this, pal! I just got back form a Beto rally and I was hoping to kick back with a steamed-soy, vegan, fair-trade coffee, if you don't mind!" --Austinite

there are no homeless camps in Round Rock. You must be thinking of the one under 45 & lake creek, which is within the city of Austin.
Otherwise Wilco & RR doesn’t tolerate bums & beggars in the county.
