Hello all.

I am moving to Europe at the end of the month, and have been trying to figure out how to get out of my apartment lease. However, it does not look good, so I need to sublet it. I have tried posting on craigslist.org, but it is just so swamped that there is no way to make myself stand out.

If any of you have any ideas, please let me know.

I would suggest you contact the poster who is looking for short term let in the area you have your apartment - they don't want to pay $1800 p/month for month to month (It's in the thread title). So may be it would work out for all parties if your lease is running for a few more months, I think they only needed it for 3 months or so.

There is still 6-7 months left on my lease unfortunately. It goes out on in April of 2010. It is a one bedroom apartment in a brand new apartment complex, and is $656 a month.

I am still trying Craigslist, but it is just so swamped! There are over 1000 postings a day, which is just crazy.

What part of the city is it in?
When will it be available?
Do they allow dogs?

It is north Austin, near Round Rock. Right at I 35 and 45. We need it taking over on September 1st, so very soon. And yes, they allow dogs, but they will require a pet security deposit, as with most apartments.

And I believe whoever you sublet to has to gain the apartment management consent - they will want to have information on file about who is occupying the apartment to the end of your lease. Though there shouldn't be any further deposit payable (except for pet) as you already paid it when you move in.
The other solution might be, since few people can get accommodation for three months, that you sublet at a total amount - whatever that is left to pay on the lease and go through the apartment management (protects everyone). This way noone has to fear a scam (there's been a few I think on Craigslist etc, where people have paid to move in short term upfront and then found out they were scammed).

You are correct. The apartment complex said that the subletee will need to apply like everyone else, and they will simply assume my lease, as just a name transfer. So, everything is done through the apartment office, and there is no need for money upfront or anything crazy like that. In my ads, I have even offered to pay the person moving in 200 bucks, and leave a 26 inch LCD tv, but no bites after three days. So now I am starting to freak out, because I cant afford to buy my way out of the lease.

Best of luck to you, it seems you came to the right forum. Someone, will know someone who is looking... looks like you already have a couple of possibilities.
Also, had you looked in the WANTED HOUSING section of Craigslist, Austin. There aren't as many listings and you may find a good fit for you.
