Hi everyone,

I work for a Software product company based in CA and we have planned to open a new office in Texas(Austin or Houston) . I will be in charge of this new office(small - <5 people initially)

I want to know what are the locations we should consider in and around Austin / Houston ? (both for office as well as home)

Some criteria could be

1. Within 30 - 40 mins drive from the airport as we will have a lot of business travellers.
2. Good school districts
3. Office space in the business district
4. Less than 15 minutes commute between home and office
5. 2BR apartment or townhomes for less than $1000 rent p.m

Please give me some suggestions in Austin.

1) Pretty much everywhere in austin is going to be 30-40 minutes from the airport so that shouldnt be a constraint.
2) best school districts are eanes, round rock, lake travis, leander (in that order?)
3) Ok
4) this one will be tough. you will probably have to be within a 10 mile radius of downtown. The only good school district that can support this is eanes (westlake). Do you mean 15 minutes at rush hour or 15 minutes normally?
5) This may be tough as well given the constraint of 4.

Hi Austin97,

Thanks for your reply. If I simply ask you to ignore my contraints and name 2 or 3 places of your choice - What would your recommendations be ? And why ?

I am visting Austin next week and would like to check out a few places. So your recommendations will definitely help.

I think the Arboretum area would be perfect for you. Lots of new office space and great apartment complexes - Riata is one you can check out. Some of the companies in this area include Apple, SunMicrosystems, and Emerson. I know they just built a brand new office building next to Riata.

I have no idea about the school district though. I would imagine that you could find an apartment within 15 minutes of this area that is located in a good district.

I would recommend looking at Ben white Blvd (Hwy 71), East of I-35 for office space. There are a lot of business parks there and it's spitting distance to the airport. The cost would be lower and there are nice neighbourhoods and schools west of I-35 (South Austin). It's Austin ISD, but the schools are pretty good.

Hola AT, yes it's been a while! Vagaries of life had me in the dungeon all that time. Nice to be back, however it may only be briefly as the itch to relocate has bitten once again...

Relocate? Are you crazy? You can't leave Austin. But, if you must, at least you can do plenty of research here at City-Data!!

True on the crazy and research parts, but my relocation choices are places I probably know more about already than most of the members.
Only one where I'll need help on is....North of the border!
