The news came a bit late for me, but MC Howard is now closed. For those who may not have heard of it, this was a great surplus electronics place for hobbyists.

It was not a restaurant, bar, or "live music" dive, but MC Howard was in business for a long time here and well-known among "real men" who still know how to build or repair things The owner and employees were always great to chat with, and reminiscent of long-time Austin residents. I'm guessing he probably retired.

This is the only link I can find...

How did I not know this place existed? Bummer it's gone. It's hard to find tinker stores for electronic geeks these days. And for those of you who say "What about Fry's?" or "Radio Shack"....no. no. no. no. Those places are not the same.

To NoMore07-Bantam Electronics is still around I think. They've moved several times. I think they used to be "Tinkertronics", then got bought by Bantam. But last time I was in there, it was still staffed by knowledgeable nerds, so if you are looking for something look 'em up.

Bantam Electronics: OEM Manufacturing Services, Servers and Storage Systems, Parts and Supplies

But, like most places...they are starting to phase out their discreet components and are going very computer oriented.

There's a good one in Webster (just outside of Houston) called EPO Electronics.
