American teacher didn't believe Australia was a country | Daily Mail Online

A college professor with a PhD didn’t believe Australia is a country so she failed her student. Prof some people with a university degree can be very stupid.

That professor should have her PhD revoked. I have a hard time believing this is not satire.

I mean, Americans are not known for their geographical knowledge, but your average American middle schooler knows Australia is a country. That an adult, much less one with a very advanced education, has gone through life without hearing reference to the country of Australia is incredible.

I mean, she knew it was a continent, so I'd like to ask her which countries she believes occupy it.

For a professor this is inexcusable.

Laymen, well...I've met many around the world that didn't think Canada was a country, saying things like " but you're part of the US aren't you? "

Ah, ignorant people. So entertaining.

Well considering it's an American, I'm really not surprised, no offence.

I’ve even heard some people say (usually elderly) say Canada is part of the United Kingdom which isn’t too far from the truth in times past. If this professor was elderly and said Australia was a colony of the UK then I’d say “poor dear, time to retire”. Canada and USA are more like New Zealand and Australia. Similar, but different.

No offense taken. I fully admit my geographical ignorance after graduating school. Learned a great deal of geography during my 8 years in the US Navy. Saw majority of the Mediterranean countries. If I hadn’t injured my shoulder and been forced out I would have gone on to see the Pacific countries. However, merely serving in the Navy doesn’t mean we all learned some basic geography. Some merely learned where was the bar/pub closest to the pier. So sad. We went to Athens Greece and all some of those sailors saw was the nearest bar.

I will never forget being in Fiji one August and the weather was a bit cool. I commented that it was not unexpected, being mid winter. This couple looked very startled and commented, how CUTE that it was winter. He was supposedly a Wall St banker.

It’s a brick and mortar university with an increasing global presence. It’s a non profit.
Unlike the University of Phoenix which does not have a main campus and is a for profit enterprise.
