I'm considering a move to Sydney. I'm just beginning my research. The company I'm targeting is in Lane Cove. Looking at the schools' websites, they look terrific. Is the curriculum similar to US (i.e. in kindergarten kids learn to read, write, etc). I have a rising kindergartener.

Also I notice the school year starts in January. Could an international student start in the middle of the year or is that taboo? Thanks in advance.

I googled for you and found this website that might give you some answers:

How do public schools in Australia compare to US?

I don't think there is any issue starting at a school mid-year

Most schools quite happily take students all the way through the year. Of course it depends on if there is a waiting list or not.

Lane Cove is an excellent suburb in Sydney and although I dont know anything about the schools I would venture to say that the public schools would be good. It's an affluent area - parents well educated. Also there would be very expensive top quality private schools near there too - I think.

We are moving to the US - so all my questions are the other way around

good luck

Thank you all so much for your quick and helpful responses. I am glad to hear that Lane Cove is a nice suburb. I'm sure more questions will arise!

The one thing I would advise you with is check with the cut off dates before you enroll mid-year. Being that the school year is switched your child could wind up being a year older (or younger) than everyone else in his class.
