Just a little nit pick:

When did it become OK to put your hat over your heart instead of your hand when the National Anthem is performed? Seems like I first noticed Richard Childress doing it, now it seems like just about everyone does it.

Everything I've read says "men not in uniform should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold the headdress at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart…”

My first thought was it's just another way to expose your sponsor's name to the camera.

BTW, this year's performance at Atlanta was awesome.

That is a sad thought...I hope you are wrong but it wouldn't suprise me. To many of these people the money is the most important thing. Sponser = money!

My hand always goes over my heart, but my hat is also in it. I'd rather do it like that than find someone's beer spilled all over it.

You're right, you're being nitpicky. But I'll one-up you -- Why do we feel the need to perform the national anthem before every sporting event?

For me and my personal opinion--it is out of respect. I love doing it and it makes me feel good! I enjoy seeing everyone else doing it. I feel it brings us together as a nation-- I believe it's called "patriotism", but that's just my opinion!

Just like when a driver is interviewed after a race they always have a beverage in hand (with the label always showing) and take enough swigs so that the "sponsor" gets his paid for TV time.

I don't remember Mark Martin taking a dose of Viagara back when that was his sponsor.

Tradition: an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action, or behavior (as a religious practice or a social custom).

There's a time and place for everything. IMO, during the National Anthem is not the time.

Not sure about MM. Wonder if this driver ever...

I suppose I can understand during times of war, but today we're talking about nothing more than sporting events. They're not events of national importance or significance.

Anyway, it is sort of funny whenever the drivers are interviewed after the race and they work to get all of their sponsors names out there.

If the National Anthem was not played at sporting events, when would we ever hear it?

I usually pause the race on my DVR and catch up later in the day. As I fast forward through the pre-race bloat, I ALWAYS stop at the singing of the National Anthem, then FF to the start of the race.
