"You glide into your driveway behind the wheel of your brand new vehicle. The new purchase sticker is conspicuously displayed on the side window for all to see. Of course, you've made sure that you pick up the car on Saturday, so the neighbors will be outside doing yard work and perhaps will get the opportunity to witness your shiny new purchase. As you open the door, you anticipate the crush of your neighbors rushing over so they can drool over your shiny new car. With a feeling of sublime satisfaction, you bask in the glow of celebrity of the block status. However, after your 15 minutes of fame, you need to ask yourself, "Was it worth the several thousand dollars less that the car is worth now that it's officially a "used car?""
Sorry, but I buy cars for personal satisfaction. It's never investment, it's never about money, it's never about status. It's about how fast I can go 'round corners
I've NEVER bought a car, used or new, so the neighbors can drool over it. I've brought home a couple new babies in the dead of night, as a matter of fact.
I buy my cars so I can drool over them. And If I want to buy a brand-new, smells terrific, nobody's spilled a Slushy in the back seat new car, it's nobody else's business.

Yes, who buys a pair of jeans for its investment purposes? You buy them to use them, not invest in them.
The problem isn't buying a new car, the problem is people that think like that in the article linked.
I will say this though - the newness wears off a lot sooner than the payments, so make sure you buy something you'll love.
