My car was hit by someone and basically totaled. The insurance company of the person who was at fault is paying. Though my car, for all intents and purposes, is "totaled" I am still able to drive it. The insurance company came by and assessed my car's salvage value at around $4100 with 87,000 miles on it and I am now waiting for a check. However, I now have about 90,000 miles on the car since it's my only way to get around until I can replace my car.
Is this going to be a problem for the salvage company or do they just adjust the check slightly upon retrieval of the vehicle?
Insurance companies own the salvage, and they usually contract with an auction service to sell it. The auction service has a tow truck get your car and bring it to the auction lot, and your insurance company deals directly with you.
I do not think that you will hear back from the insurance company given the few extra miles on a car that is only being salvaged for ~$4k. In the states I'm familiar with, I'm pretty certain that the insurance company can make an adjustment based on the revised condition (more miles). That does not mean that they will.
I also agree with M3 Mitch in that, if a car is driveable and easily fixable, you might be better off hanging on to it from the insurance company. If you do that, ask them to not give it a salvage title (they may or may not be able to work with you on this). IF you do end up with a salvage title you have to correct whatever is wrong to make the car pass inspection. One last note is, make sure before you do this, that the car is not being assigned a "junk" or "export only" title. If it gets that, you basically own something that can't be driven on the road ever again.
