I currently drive a 97 Ford Taurus and I think I might be needing to trade it in. It's at 101000 Miles and it has no power on the highway even on OD, the transmission will hesitate on rare occasion when I first put it into gear after starting it for the first time, and a couple of times recently the car would shimmy and act as if it would stall and die after first starting it. I'm not getting excellent gas mileage and to be honest, it seems like the whole thing might come apart. From what I gather, most people seem to either like this car or hate it. I bought it 4 years ago @ 79000 miles and have had to put in around $1600 in repairs besides regular maintenance. What do you think?
They were fine cars if you maintain them, We had them as fleet cars and they were ll trouble free. I had one years ago with 170k miles on it and it run great too.
They're fine. A more economical Panther (Crown Vic, Lincoln Town Car). Maybe not quite as reliable, but the Taurus really carried Ford for many years. They were a basic mid-size car for people that wanted something a little bigger than the Japanese cars of the time. Nothing fancy.
I think $1,600 in repairs in four years and 80,000 miles on a car that's 15 years old pretty much says it all. Not bad at all.
I think that you don't drive much at all. The average miles per year on your car is 6733. You have driven the car for the past 4 years and your yearly average is 5500. That comes out to a tad over 105 miles a week. I would take the car to a shop have them go through everything and get you back in working order. Then I would call it a day. That is unless you are dead set on a new car or a gently used one.
