that can take place and prevent someone from going to work, school, etc... for a day and that takes less than a day to fix and doesn't cost a lot, be specific, something that will require you to take it to get it repaired.

Are we to assume its driveable enough to get it to the shop?

Hmmm, quick and inexpensive to fix.... Why not just fix it yourself and get yourself off to work or school on time?

You might want to get a subscription to Triple A so that if you do have problems a flat bed or tow truck will be taking your car to an appropriate garage fairly quickly..

The 'shop' is 3 miles from my house. Work is 27 miles.
Driveable to one ain't so for the other.

I want to know what kind of excuse one can use for not going to school or work for a day if you already told them it was because of car problems. When they ask specifically what was wrong with it, then I need options of what to tell them this is why it has to be specific, something that will take at least 3 hours to fix.

Just tell them you have a eye problem.

You, hey, I will not be in today, I have an eye problem.

Your boss, sorry to hear that. A eye problem?

You, Yea, I can't see myself coming into work today.

go to work ya slacker or take a sick day.
Your boss will see you as unreliable and put you down on the list for a raise or promotion.

If your car broke down you can take a taxi to work or get a ride with someone else.

Hmmm.... An excuse eh....

Fuel pump, ignition module, burst radiator hose or heater core, broken ball joint or CV axle....

Things like that will leave the car undriveable and can happen to anyone at anytime.

Flat tire or dead battery wouldn't be as believable since they could be fixed or jump-started in just a few minutes.

Didnt realise the topic was about excuses for not going to work..
If your taking time off work is a very rare occurrence i'd just be up front with the boss and say you cant come in on a certain day due to personal problems, if you are doing it all the time and are using the car as the excuse this time then you.ve picked a poor excuse to take the day off because with a bit of detective work on the bosses part the *** could be up and you are now facing a boss who has proof you are lying.
You could say you had to transport an ailing relative and she threw up all over the interior of your car thereby needing to take the car in for a complete upholstery shampoo, going to take most of the day.
Of course if you forgot that you told this boss that this person had died and you had to take that day off to go to their funeral some time in the past =game over.
Or the boss asks for the name and number of the shop you are going to take the car to = game over,
or if you claim you had to take the car in for service, work or a replacement part and the boss wants to see the sales receipt? heres your sign= game over.
