I really need to take you on concerning a standard shift getting better mileage than an automatic.
In 2000, I owned a Dakota six cylinder, standard shift pickup truck.
It was new, so tune ups were not the problem. That truck got terrible mileage.
With a fill up in Los Angeles, on a trip to Las Vegas (300 miles), I would have to stop at state line to fill up because it was just above empty.
In 2002 I bought my present Dakota pickup (new).
It has the 5.9 V8 and is automatic.
On the same trip, there is no stopping at state line, and when reaching the strip In Las Vegas, I still have between a half, and one quarter of a tank left.
The present truck does a lot better in city driving than the 6 cylinder stick did.
Bob.
You really need to "take you on?"
Your six cylinder Dakota had worse mileage because that generation Dodge six was just a crappy engine. Chrysler hasn't had a good six cylinder engine until 2011 with the new Pentastar. The difference wasn't the transmissions.
It does have a "battery" (holding tank) for electricity created by slowing down/stopping.
No it doesn't.
The Mazda Skyactiv (no e on the end) engines have no electric component other than the battery used to start it (just like every other gasoline engine).
We just returned from a 350 mile trip in a rented Mazda 3 with Skyactiv technology.
I filled it up just before returning the rental car, and it took 9.2 gallons, so we averaged 38 MPG on a trip with about 200 miles of highway driving and 150 miles of city/small town driving.
It's great to see the Mazda 3 finally getting decent mileage with the SkyActiv engine. But when I was looking for a new, fuel-efficient compact, price was a big factor, and the 2012 Hyundai Accent came with GDI standard 1.6 l., 138 hp, 6 spd. (manual) engine, for $3,600 less... It may not be as powerful, but gets 30/40 mpg (I'm averaging over 37 mpg in mixed driving) and I'm happy with the handling & acceleration. It's only a little smaller & fits my 6' 4" frame and all four of us just fine. Maybe it's a bit no frills, but I really like this entry-level car for the money...

Pretty impressive.
Very impressive! I bought my Mazda 3 w/skyactiv, at the beginning of April. Been on several short trips mixed in with city driving and have never got below 37 Mpg.
I am very satisfied with this car. Not to mention I love the design. The smile on the front is what sold me!
