Your better off getting a re-manufactured one from a parts store with a warranty.

Unless you have the time to go to the "junk yard" and they test it for you first.
and then....

A re-man would be better off. You may even have luck finding a car/truck that somebody is parting out on Craigslist.

A used alternator is a crap-shoot. It may very well be worse than what you have.

I'd go to a parts store, but with one word of caution: Whatever alternator you choose, make sure it has the life-time warranty.

If it's for a Ford, you do not want a used unit and you don't want a rebuilt either. Ford has a final diode inside the alternator that acts like a gate for the current. A bad diode will leave you with a dead battery even though the alternator will show good in tests as it allows the current to run back thru the unit when the engine is not running. Rebuilders do not check for this and neither do the test units at parts houses. All they test for is output. Buy new or expect issues.....if it's a Ford product.

so you have time to wait for someone to ship a used alternator to you, but you dont have time to go to a salvage yard to get one?

i agree with the others though, get a reman or new one. dont waste your time on a used alternator.

What vehicle / application?? (this is VERY important in alternators).

I would go NEW if you are planning on keeping this vehicle, and don't like being stranded or changing alternators often.

Often the price difference is minimal (depending on application)

It would help to know what kind of vehicle, but in general alternators is not something you should buy used. I would go with a reman at the very least, but then you are talking a very small price difference between reman and new in the case of most alternators. Overall, depening on the application and how much longer you plan on keeping the vehicle, I would probably recommend buying new.

True,
In some cases a new Alt can be cheaper than a reman.
