Funny.. on Clark Howard they were talking about the Honda Insight and how the batteries are going bad. To replace, $3800, there goes all the money you saved in gas.
I know, that is the one true problem with buying a Hybrid. Sure the gas mileage may be great but wait 5-6 years when the battery needs replacing and BAM there goes all your gasonline savings. If they don't find a way to reduce the cost of a new battery, the trade-in value of Hybrids that are older will be next to nothing. I mean who's going to want to shell out X amount of dollars on a used Hybrid than automatically have to pay $4000 upfront for a new battery?
I already "drive" one of those (Honda Reflex, 250cc auto transmission). 75 miles per gallon. It cost about 2000 dollars used (mine is yellow though). If I can ever find a used one with the ABS option, I'd trade up for that, but the brakes on mine are pretty good as is. I also have one of these that get's 90 miles per gallon and tops out at about 55 :

I lived over in Europe fifteen years ago and most people coped with high petrol prices by... not driving. In the UK bicycling was very common and a respectable way to get around, and not all that hard or dangerous. If people had cars they usually had a small Ford Fiesta or a Peugeot in Citreon. Some people did have trucks and vans, they just didn't use them to go down and pick up their coffee like many people in the US do.

15 years ago? That time the gas prices were exiguous in Europe.
Driving small cars, using the bicycle, or even to walk has much to to with infrastructure over here. Most European cities don't offer sufficient parking facilities, but bikeways and public transport instead.

if gasoline suddenly went up to $8 a gallon here, what car would you go out and buy? What would you do with your gas guzzlin' suv? keep it for home depot runs?

I would drive an ATV. Those things are awesome. I would miss my new 2008 Nissan Armada LE though.

when i lived in paris i drove a solex (motorized bicycle) got great gas mileage and it never broke down. life was more simple i was not as active as i am now.
i did not have a car.
