I sat on my buddy's front porch and he said to me; just watch for the number of heavy duty, luxury pickups. Sure enough, about one out of six were those $ 40k to $ 50k models, yet you never see anything loaded on the back. Why the infatuation?

What ?? And scratch the paint ??
They are just status symbols, showing off that they can afford such a thing. Like all the 4x4 SUVs ( see Hummer) that have never seen a dirt road.
I drive one. Yes. I haul things. I drive one because a sedan just won't go on the ranch roads. I get 17-18 mpgs town, 22-24.5 hiway over the last 120,000 miles. So much for the poor mileage comment. This is about as relevant as to why people buy expensive cars. Mostly, because they can and they don't have the need to explain it to folks that can't.

Same reason there are so many four dour luxury sedans, yet you never see anybody riding in one except the driver.
Actually, I don't know why everyone DOESN'T buy pickup trucks. Now that trucks are four door, why even consider a sedan? Trucks are as comfortable and luxurious as sedans and they also have utility.
True full size cars and wagons are a thing of the past. For years the media has been telling us that the people don't want full size vehicles but IMO they are wrong. It looks like many who 30 years ago would have bought a full size wagon or car are now buying full size 4-door pickups and SUV's because they are the only roomy vehicle made any more. A 4 door pick-up is really the most versatile vehicle made. Plenty of room for a family and a large open trunk to hull stuff. Put a tool box across the back and now you have a lockable section of that trunk as well. A true full size SUV such as a Tahoe, Expedition, or Suburban come in at a close second but are the exact same thing as their truck counterparts.
There seems to always be a part of the population though that hates trucks and don't want them in their communities. They see trucks as only work vehicles and don't see how anyone can drive such a vehicle. I think that number has come down since the recent (about 12/15 years ago) design trends has changed to modern and stylish full 4 door pick-ups with all options available. They are quite comfortable.
i drive my truck AND my wife drives her truck, we don't even own a car. Funny thing is mine is a $47k truck with no bedliner and we haul most stuff in it. Hers is a $30k truck with a bedliner, and we rarely haul anything in her bed. Both trucks are used to pull our horse trailer, which is the main reason she got one this time around. She got tired of having to get me to pull the trailer or let her use mine.
Speaking of 4 door trucks, i remember working in Central America back in the mid-90's and every truck you saw was a 4 door truck even on Nissan small trucks! Yet here in the states the best you could find in the sub 3/4 ton class was a king cab that may or may not have a rear door.

How do you know there isn't anything in the back if you're just watching them drive by? Maybe they own a boat and need to tow it.
