Just wondering why VW hasn't released a diesel GTI? Or is the diesel Golf essentially a diesel GTI?

I assume you mean why no GTD in the US for 2014? Probably the same reason the US has NEVER had a GTD (and no, the Golf TDI is NOT a GTD), not enough demand. But that's changing, all news and press releases indicate that a GTD will be sold in the US starting in 2015 (2016 model year).

That said, you can buy a Golf TDI and more or less create your own GTD... costs money and has a bit of labor involved, but it's not outside the realm of the home wrench.

GTD is coming as others have said. A golf TDI isn't going to be terribly far off from the driving sensation of a GTI, long as you upgrade the suspension and seats. The new GTD which should be coming in 2015 is going use a higher output TDI engine (I believe 180 horsepower) as opposed to the 140 horsepower diesel currently offered. While the current diesel is a great little powerplant, a bit more horsepower would be welcomed!

This kind of statement always makes me laugh. I mean, really, for 99% of the people who'll buy the car it'll never see a closed course/track. The older ALH engines that VW put in their cars only had 90hp/150 ft/lbs of torque and I can tell you with absolute certainty that it is Plenty to break every speed limit in the county. Heck, it's plenty to break those speed limits badly enough that you'll earn a "Go directly to jail" card, or at the very least a "reckless driving" award (which tends to be a mandatory appear in court award).

Meanwhile, the engine now puts out ~50% more power and ~25% LESS economy. Umm, hello? Can we maybe have the same economy and only +25% power? Heck, I'd be tickled pink for the SAME (more than ample) power that I have today and an Increase in economy. But that's why I'm still driving a 2001 (well, that and it's better equipped than every new vehicle I've be in for under $35k).

I think the A3 TDI - S line is closest it can get right now, too bad they discontinued it and will only be available as a sedan in the future...

I love the 90 hp TDI VW engine, and I'd rather have fuel economy over HP as well, but HP makes vehicles easier to sell in the USA.

The automotive opinion makers in the USA enjoy talking about 0-60 times for some stupid reason and the majority of the car buying public has been made to think this is somehow valuable to them as well, so if an auto has a slow 0-60 time compared to other vehicles we're supposed to think that it is a bad car, which is why VW has been turning up the HP on their diesels.

For years, whenever companies like GM became lazy and sales started to dwindle with a certain model, they just turned up the HP to boost sales.

Its funny because the GLI is the GTI version of the jetta and in 2010 they had the TDI Cup edition jetta. It was a TDI but had the looks of the GLI. Its funny they never did something like that with the GTI
