First I can remember was 9/12/2011. I had worked overnight in Fort Lee NJ, overlooking the eerily empty George Washington bridge. the next morning a dude needed a ride down the highway and I just couldn't imagine what he could do to me after what had just happened--of course there was no problem.
If you're scared of hitch-hikers, when they first talk to you, act like you're the scary and crazy one and you shouldn't have a problem. Of course if they're legitimately good people, then they might be frightened and go away. I only drive in urban areas though, so I've never experienced this.
Once,a female on New Years night 1993. I would rather not comment further.
BWAHAHAHAHA!!!!
Heck, I've BEEN a hitchhiker before. I was on my way from TX to VA. An old man picked me up and told me he'd put me on an airplane THE NEXT MORNING. Yuh-huh, SURE. NO WAY!!! So he put me on a bus that night. Me and my big mouth! Still, awful nice. I think I was about 20.
Another time I was in the Everglades (I swear it's true) a couple was out searching for their daughter. I was walking down the road (Alligator Alley), pitch black night and they picked me up and drove me to where I was staying in Ft. Lauderdale.
Hey, I grew up in the 70's. We hitchhiked all the time.
I generally don't pick up people on the road but if I see someone walking and there's a car broken down I might, depending on what the person looks like. If I'm in a truck I might let them sit in the back.
Ride boards in college back in the 70s were the place to go to get a ride. I am wondering how they have evolved in the internet age and if anybody has used them. The ride shares on CL are downright scary.
I always thought picking up a HH would be cool. Finally, while driving from AZ to MN in 2010 I did it. Twice. In the same day.
The first time I drove by the kid and went out of my way to go back and grab him. Turns out he was a French kid hiking the Continental Divide and needed to get from Durango to Pagosa Springs so I go him over there. Later in the day I fueled up and saw a guy two minutes later as I was heading up the road. His car was twenty minutes up the road he said, so I believed him and had him hop in. We had a brief but nice conversation. Nice guy, and sure enough we came about a broken down station wagon. He hopped out and offered me a few bucks, which I declined as it sounded like he was down on his luck. He opened his car and popped the hood to do whatever (add water to the radiator or something). I took off and sorta felt like I could check something off my bucketlist.
