In the well deserved euphoria over the rescue of the kidnapped woman in Philly, what got little attention was that the car the perp was driving had a GPS locator in it installed by the dealer that sold him the car. That is something to think about the next time you buy a used car.

This is very common when people with crappy and horrible credit buy from a buy here pay here type auto lot. They pay huge down payments for mediocre vehicles bought at auction and then get to pay huge interest rates. If they skip a payment the GPS allows the car lot to come repo the vehicle.
Very common practice. JD Byrider, Drivetime, etc are national buy here pay here type lots.

As was stated beforehand, its common enough with the lots that deal with the worst credit risks. I worked at a marquee store, but they had a finance company that dealt with exclusively the worst of the worst credit risks. The loan portfolio of this bank had a 33% repossession rate. Many of the loans would come with caveats; if the driver had previously had a DUI, they had to have ignition interlocks even if the law didn't require it. All of these cars had GPS and remote shutdown on them as well.
You don't have anything to worry about if you're a normal borrower from Bank Of America or Capital One or Toyota Financial or Ford Credit.

This scenario is probably much more common than you might expect, HappyRider . . .
What would you do if you sold a vehicle with only minimum down to an individual with lousy credit? I definitely don't blame the dealer one bit as they has a great deal of money at stake.
The best solution is to GROW UP and CLEAN UP YOUR CREDIT RATING BY PAYING YOUR BILLS and this would be a non-issue.
Always love a dumb criminal, it makes for fun reading. The sad part is , is that he should have never been out on the street. Once again our criminal system lets multiple offenders run free.
Don't let this be a big surprise to you but all cars sold today have a GPS locating device in them. On most Ford/Mazda products you'll find the black box behind the glove box. If you have Sirius radio, you have it installed with the radio. Big brother is watching.
I wonder if the GPS tracking is disclosed in the purchase paperwork? If it is disclosed and then agreed to then no big deal. But if it wasn't disclosed and not agreed to...

Negative. These are GPS receivers. They cannot transmit your location. You would need to have the car's blackbox read to determine where the car was in the past.

These units are not just GPS receivers. They are made specifically for the used car dealer market and are capable of real-time reporting of a vehicle's location. They can also disable the vehicle from starting.
