Looking for ideas on what type of car to get. I'm open to almost every brand and car under 30k. I'd prefer decent gas mileage and comfortable seats since it will be used for trips to the beach and vacations. Great visability is very important. Eventually, I'd want to buy a kayak (or similar) and have the car be able to carry it. Or get a small kayak trailer to haul. Any ideas?

Hatchback or a Wagon should work. VW Golf, Subaru Impreza/Forester, Honda Fit/Element, any number of crossovers...

I looked at the vw and actually loved it. Just concerned about repairs, it seems to be all I hear about with those cars. Are people just exaggerating about constant repairs on a newish car?

I keep coming back to the new Honda fit so that may be the one.

Are you talking about a bike rack or actually putting the bike in the car? My dad is a bike fanatic and he has a forester with a bike rack and loves it

I'd prefer inside the car just because of bike theft issues.

The Fit is difficult to beat. I know someone who bought a Fit as a city car, replacing a Golf because of on-going issues with the VW as it aged. The summation of the experience is that the Golf was an economy car with the pretensions of maintenance of a car three times its price, and as such when it came time to replace the Golf, after another $800 repair bill, it was down to a Fit or a Prius, but her use cycle for that car did not make sense to pay the premium for a hybrid, since the hatch is an around-town car, with a larger vehicle that is used for trips, etc.

A CR-V would be another consideration for a slightly larger vehicle, since it's a reliable vehicle and has good space utilization, such that you would not have issues with the bicycle inside. It's an economical 4WD, too because the rear wheels only engage when there is slip, otherwise, the CR-V functions as a FWD. You can also get a FWD-only CR-V as well.

I'd just get a locking bike rack.

Otherwise:

Subaru Outback- pretty much the poster-child for mountain bikes, a great car still
Subaru Forester
Ram 1500 + Camper (deep discounts)
Honda CR-V
Mazda CX-9

Ford Focus Wagon. 30 mpg and they are under 6k. These wagons have 73 cubic feet of storage with the seats folded down. That is more space than almost every small suv out there.

Front wheel had to come off but the road and mountain bike can ride inside. They also have roof rails for a rack to get the kayak mounted.

Or a used Honda Element would be perfect.
