My guess on the $32xx figure is the purchase price of the light (from Mercedes) plus removal and installation...either way, if you've got the dough to buy a high end vehicle, you're going to pay high end maintenance...if you're to poor to afford operating costs (including maintenance) on the Mercedes, you likely shouldn't be buying it.
So how often does one replace the headlight? Sure the bulbs burn out, but not buying the car because the price of one random lifetime part is kind of dumb.
I've found that aftermarket parts are within the same ballpark price for most makes/parts. Sure it's a ton more if you take it to a dealer, but an independent shop installing aftermarket parts, it's close to the same cost.
If you need a headlight housing it's probably because you wrecked. Most likely have insurance. That's why high end cars get totaled fast. Because it costs more to fix than to give you money on the value
Mercedes 500 sedan.
Cost of part - one headlight - $3,250.
Ford or Chevrolet - one headlight - around $250.00.
Enough said.
I remember when a headlight was actually a headlight: a hunking big goop of glass with a connector on the back and a filament inside. Would set you back exactly $9.95 at Wal-mart or $11.95 at some auto store on the way to work. Of course, that was real money back in the 80's. Replacement would take 3-5 minutes.

Closer to $20 now. And much smaller (pretty much a thinner bulb that twists into the housing). Everything else you said still applies.
