Can anyone give me a few names and makes of safe SUV's for a family of 4? We have 2 young kids and can spend up to 18k max, prefer new or newer resale.
Safety & 4 wheel drive is what we need.
Since we know very little about Suv's we want your opinion.

A new SUV big enough for a family of 4 might run more than $18K. One suggestion: consider buying a used car from one of the car rental outfits. Hertz was selling their one-year old SUV's here recently, with a considerable reduction in price over a new one, and they didn't have many miles on them (less than 10,000...several had only 6000-7000). Even if you bought a brand-new one, it will depreciate several thousand $$$ as soon as you drive it off the lot. And a car with 10,000 miles on it feels pretty much new. If you take care of it, most newer vehicles will get 150,000 miles before you run into bigger maintenance issues. Just a thought.
The Subaru's are VERY popular up here in Alaska because of the AWD performance on snow and ice, and because they have six air bags for crash protection. Down side: they don't offer much room for a family. (Yeah...you could get 4 people in one, but leave the dog at home if you want room for groceries)

You can try sites like Edmunds.com, Cars.com, Motortrend.com, Automotive.com, for prices and reviews, but the best way is to bring your family to some dealerships and look firsthand, pile the family in, and go for a ride, get a good feel before you decide.
We bought a 2004 Trailblazer LS for below $18K.
4x4,dual A/C,CD player blah blah blah...has rear A/C controls too if anyone rides back there.A little too much plastic interior wise but oh well.
It has been a reliable vehicle and can easily hold four people and two dogs....It also can carry a lot of 'stuff' inside.
Only quibble we have is dealer related.
We did like our Jeep Grand Cherokee better however.
jeep liberty, I had a 4x4 sport i just turned over to my girlfriend. I drove 80k miles in 3 years and the only thing i had to do in that period was tires and battery.
great vehicle for the $$ plus it has a two speed transfer case, making it a trew 4x4, not that girlyman stuff with a single speed transfer case...
I just got my second Subaru Forrester. Passed the first one down to my 16 year old with 150,000 miles on it. No major repairs. It was fine when the kids were little, but got cramped when they became long legged teenagers. Now they rarely ride with me anymore so I am fine with the size and got another one. Also our car insurance company categorizes them as station wagons so insurance is cheap.
