Bear with me, I am a middle aged woman who has driven primarily Japanese cars for most of my adult life. My parents had a Mercury Zephyr in the late 70s and that car was a disaster. None of us has ever had an American car since then.

I am looking for a small AWD drive vehicle as my commuting car (1 hr each way in traffic). Comfort & reliability are at the top of my priority list. Last weekend I went test driving, thinking I would go with another Japanese car.

Honda HRV - Liked it better than the CRV - Not very comfortable and hated the touchscreen dashboard (really stupid idea IMO) ruled out
Mazda - CX5 - really good handling, nice ride, but the seats were so uncomfortable, I had to rule it out.
Nissan Rouge- Very comfortable but the road noise was so loud, ruled out.

Last night I saw a commercial for the Buick Encore. There is a lease deal for $190 per month with $190 down if you turn in a non GM lease. My lease is up on my Hyundai in Sept.
I'm so tempted (taking a test drive on Sat) but I am skeptical as my only experience with American Cars was abysmal (albeit a lifetime ago).

So, looking for opinions. Can I go American?

2002 LeSabre 280K miles, needed a head gasket, still driving, looks new. IMO totally go for it, the new designs are really nice looking. If I didn't need a Yukon I would go with the Buick smaller SUV, they are really good looking cars.

Are you leasing? If so, I wouldn't worry too much about reliability.

Every automaker has reliable and unreliable vehicles in their fleet. I was parked next to a newer Honda minivan today and when she started it the thing sounded like a ticking timebomb. It's obvious the lifters had issues in the engine. But Hondas are the most reliable...

Check Subaru. They have a small cross over based upon the Subaru Impreza.

Yes.
If you want smooth ride and quiet... that's what Buicks do.
Encore may be small, but it's a "traditional" Buick.

If you like the Encore, it is actually made in South Korea, the home country of the Hyundai you currently have. They are selling very well. We looked at it when shopping for my daughter, and while it was nice, it was a bit too small for her to load the dog's cage and stuff in the back without folding down the rear seats. She ended up with a Nissan Rogue and loves it even a year later.

Good luck on your shopping!

I had a 1993 Buick Le Sabre, and it was the most reliable car I ever owned.
