When I spent the summer in Wurzberg, I noted that many new Mercedes were about 70% of the price they were here.

That was 1999. Dunno how things are now.

And one way or another, you have to figure in taxes.

Mercedes in Europe is like Chevrolet in the USA.
They also produce commercial vehicles (trucks), like the Sprinter (delivery van). The L-series truck (which was produced for nearly 40 years), is well-known for its durability all over the world, notably African and Middle Eastern countries.

That said, for most European motorists, a M-B private car is still for the well-off, in general. You'll still see a lot more cars in the supermini segment (such as VW Polo, Renault Clio, Ford Fiesta) and one step up (VW Golf, Opel Astra, Ford Focus, Renault Megane).
