The roar of a big block in a boat on the water. Rather it be a chevy, ford, or chrysler engine, they all sound badass when built with a nasty cam under a load at 6,000 RPM on the water. Nothing comes close except maybe formula offroad.

I had a 95 Dakota with a v-8 that I always started with the door open so I could hear the starter.

I love the starter sound of a 90's Toyota truck the same for 90's Hondas.

The sound of a Mack truck air starter scares me in a good way.

External wastegates. Generally sound pretty bad recorded, very wicked in person. And of course turbo whistle.

so many great engine sounds. in no particular order;

a late 60s V12 ferrarri engine at full song. it has a cry like no other engine.

a late 60s V12 jaguar. it has a sound of ripping canvas at full song

most any V8 american engine, especially when supercharged. the best being a 500ci chrysler hemi, supercharged making 10,000hp running on nitro-methane.

not a car engine, but a great sound none the less, the rolls-royce merlin engine in the P51 mustang.

You got it, burdell. I was gonna say 4, V-12 1,280 hp Merlin XX's on a Lancaster with paddle props on a low fly by.

I don't know if any of you have had the pleasure of seeing a Lancaster in flight, or nearby on start up or on a taxi way, but it is unbeatable.
