16 million gallons is just "a drop in the ocean" so it shouldn't be done?

Where did you get that #. And how much gas is used annually in the US.

Average car uses .15 gallons per hour idling.

That's a response to yours in the thread with theoretical numbers. If it's less than a gallon per year times 16 million cars. You said it's still just a drop in the ocean.

Ok, So that # is a guess, and my guess is compared to the amount of gas used, It's a drop in the ocean. I also said if it's a feature on a car that's one thing, But if some lunatic is shutting there car off at a red light, that's entirely different.

Cut out 16 minutes of idling a day and you save 32 gallons a year in a 4 cylinder.

How much time you spend idling obviously depends on where you are and what sort of traffic you deal with though of course.

Rule of thumb I've seen from several sources is if you'll be idling more than 10 seconds you should shut it off.

They don't care if it causes problems with your car, It will certainly shorten the life of the battery dramatically

starters, alternators, batteries.... as well as more wear and tear on the rest of the powerplant

all to save what?.... how much fuel are we really talking about?

lets say it's a 1/2 an ounce per stop/start cycle is it really worth the aggravation?

we are probably talking about less than one gallon a year!!!
Actually you're wrong about how it works. Cars that shut themselves off don't use the battery to restart. They use a high discharge capacitor. The capacitor is charged via excess power generated by the alternator (unless the car battery is low in which the alternator is used to charge it at a faster rate).

I'm not sure I understand what the aggravation is with it.

Yes, it will turn off if you're waiting at a train for 20 minutes. It stays off until it is needed (to either drive or to generate heat). It starts immediately... you don't notice the difference with the exception of the engine noise disappearing and restarting.

Mini Cooper among other new cars when "Eco" or whatever mode is engaged shuts down the motor when vehicle remains stopped.
