I always turned my car off at stop lights when I knew they would be long. Why waste gas? It doesn't take too much gas to start up a car.

One concern that I can see is that the hardest wear on a car comes every time it is started. I guess the auto makers have done something to counter that, but not sure.

About a month ago I had the opportunity to drive a Prius. What a strange little car ! Big toggle switch type shift lever, no park position, and it is totally silent until you step on the gas. Convinced me I never want one.

Would be great in large cities for the long traffic lights where people have to sit for extended periods. I presume it can be disabled at first start up to warm up the car and chip the ice and snow off.

It is typically disabled automatically until the car warms up.

My BMW does it, but only once the car is warmed up. If the engine is off for too long, then the heat or A/C doesn't beat or cool properly and it automatically turns back on. I can permanently disable the feature, but it's not that bothersome and appears somewhat effective. It's also disabled when the car is in "sport" mode.

My Benz has it, and I think it became standard on most Benz in 2011.

C'mon, y'all...the days of idling passenger vehicles is over.

The system I have ('14 SL550) only turns the car off if it can run everything else without the engine going. So, in the summer, if it needs more power for the air conditioning or whatever, it won't turn off.

Considering when driving a standard and the time lapse to put it into gear and get going gets me major horn honks, I have to wonder how many rear enders this tech. is going to cause.

Maybe all the rear enders will be in Alberta. They're not going to be able to buy too many high end cars for awhile anyway.

How would it cause more rear ending?

Our first encounter with this was with a rental Benz in Germany in 2014. , Kind of weird and unesttling at first but we got used to it pretty quickly.
