Hey guys well just found out - on my 1974 k10 chevy, I do not have 4h
my transfer case/gears are quite different!
I have
2h - N -2lo - 4lo
I dont have 4hi
I was wondering if its possible to add 4hi? Would I have to change the transfer case?
Sounds like you got a NP203 T-case. Should be able to switch it out to a NP205. Should be a direct bolt in. If it's a 203 case I remember it takes motor oil not gear oil

sweet thanks! So the np203 is standard - the reason I have 4lo and not 4hi? Again this is a 1974 k10 chevy deluxe10
if i were to just switch to a np205 - I would have 4hi? how would the truck know to engage 4hi and 4lo?
Something sounds strange. Thinking offhand, that truck would have come with the NP 205 part time or the NP 203 full time transfer case. Over the years, if it was the 203, it was probably converted to a part time system. But either way it would have 4hi as that is the gear used in 4 wheel the most because 4lo is only good for extremely low speeds.
Perhaps there is another gear that isn't shown on the shifter, as if a part time conversion was done or over the past 40 some years the 4 hi has been worn off the shift knob. Have you actually checked if the shifter will go into another gear? Have you driven the truck in one of the lows to see if it is actually a low gear? Turned while in one of the 2's to see if it is actually your missing 4hi?
Just some thoughts as it is very strange to not have 4hi and the truck wouldn't have come from the factory like that.

yeah tried it all ha ha.
only 4 shifts I can do with the shifter...
all the way down is 2hi
1 more up would be neutral
1 more up would then be 2-lo
1 more up would be 4-lo
and cant go any more up then that. if I try forcing it pass 4-lo i think it will just break the stick ha ha. Anyhow, what could this be? I am stumped as you are because I know these K10s had 4hi and 4lo
it does have manual locking hubs if that helps
anyhow, now even sure where to start.... I mean what should I try changing out? i mean does the 203 have 4hi?
I find it hard to believe you have a 2 low in a 1970 GM truck.
