I watched the video of the Si. This was the 1st generation the 2nd generation was much better. In the video the 86 model was pretty good.
I have a 88 Si sort of restored and drive it regularly. Up till recently I saw more of them on the road than any other 88 to 91 car.

Yep, huge improvements were made to the engine and suspension in the second generation making it worthy of the loving praise. But that first generation was much worse than our fond memories of the model. Perhaps they went with the torsion beam suspension not only for space saving, but also for weight saving to be ncrease fuel economy.
Well, I do have fond memories of my '86 CRX Si that I autocrossed and daily dove for a while. I had it at the same time some friends had the '88-up version and I liked mine better at the time.
My 89 CRX is still the best car I have ever owned. It was more comfortable and had way better performance than my 2004 Honda Civic. I miss it. I wish they still made cars like that.
When I was a sophomore I rode in the back area to get to school with my older brother riding shotgun in his friend's CRX. I hated that car! I was glad to ride bus home haha.
It never really was about the performance for most people, it was just the right car at the right time. I remember people waiting for months for theirs to come in. Most everyone thought they were cool no matter what model, except maybe the HF.
54 mpg!, incredible. I do recall going from nyc to virginia beach with 1 tank of gas in a 86 civic hatch. this car was a big deal, just before the si came and stole the show. 91' and up are the best looking and performing years.

But that fuel economy came at the cost of crash safety through weight saving. I remember some of those early IIHS crash test videos and they were shocking. One test included going in reverse at about 5mph into a steel post or *******. In the CRX it left an indention of the post in the rear (bumper and window frame) of the car costing thousands of dollars in damages.
