Do you need to use a parking brake if you drive an automatic? The only time I use it is if I park on a steep hill. My reasoning is that I don't want to risk accidentally forgetting I left the brake on and then drive with it on. (It might sound strange but if I'm on a hill and I use the parking brake, I put a hat on the gear shift stick to remind myself the parking brake is on.)

Every. Single. Time.

Thing is, when you use it every time you never "forget" to take it off.

On the manual transmission car I set the brake every time. I think the others all have auto features where it sets the brake for you when you park (if set to "AUTO") and releases when you want to go. One of them even holds the brake when you're at a stoplight if you push a button. Weird.

There should be a light that illuminates when the brake is set to prevent you from driving away with it on. One of my cars even puts up a beeping message on one of the LCDs if you pull it up with the car moving.

Every time. I don't like putting the weight of the vehicle on the parking pawl alone.

I don't use mine but not for that reason.

If poster had the vehicle oil undercoated every year - there would be no rust.

Only if I'm parking in a slope, it keeps the shifter from hanging up when I take it out of park. On level ground I never use it.

Well, I amfrom the old school so bear with me. My dad a mechanic/business owner would never use the parking brake unless on a hill. His reasoning was that a car moving driven or towed would still have HOT rear brake drums so if you always use the parking brake after a while the drum will WARP. Doing new brakes they always needed to be turned. So I have a Chev PU for 17 yrs and never had to turn the rear drums...shoes yes when needed. Now days with either brake drums or rotors are thinner in material and can be only turned SO much or require replacement...your call. There are limits in the Law on how much metal can be removed and still be safe. There use to be a Std from a mfg but like a machine shop owner once told me a drum was already under Std right from the box...poor quality control from the foreign mfg.

.

Always. Stick or auto. Set it before putting it in park(auto) so it rests on that rather than the parking pawl.
