Seems to me that defeats the purpose. I don't know if people buys Tesla for that feature, but what might be the attraction/benefit of that feature?

Computer assisted driving makes sense -that extra pair of eyes helps -just like a trusted passenger keeping an eye
But if gf with me in car -does not mean go to sleep at the wheel

also at this point in time, the various state laws around the country require that the driver remain in ultimate control of the vehicle. the technology for self driving cars has not yet been fully tested and debugged. i will also note that one can still hack into the system and cause problems with the car.

Both hands on the wheel, or is just one legal?

It's a legal thing, for now.

I've seen on some vehicles that have radar cruise and lane keep assist that you can remove both hands if you wedge your wallet in the steering wheel...

The term Auto Pilot and Self Driving are, (for the next few years), nothing more than marketing terms, similar to Waterproof, and Organically Grown. The terms have been massively misused by the media.

Right now, these features represent various levels of driver-assistance, more capable than Cruse Control, but far less than a proper Auto Pilot. Cruse Control with preset follow distance, lane assist, auto-breaking, etc. are all capabilities to aid the driver, not replace them.

This should have become obvious when Tesla was forced to add a Hands-On detection sensing system, to make sure you DON"T take your hands off the wheel.

What is available varies greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer, model to model. and year to year. It will certainly get more sophisticated over the next decade, but don't expect to see a one-button home-to-work commute for a long time.

Using your analogy, I can appreciate verbal warnings, but do I want my trusted friend to grab my steering wheel? Step on the break for me? Tinker with other controls, all while I try to do the same? I imagine not.....

I think that in an early stage, until we will know for sure that this system works without failure - it's better to be safe than sorry.

I’m looking forward to self driving cars, but right now it’s kind of annoying as it feels like two people trying to control the wheel.
